The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking two (2) full-time Senior Human Resources Generalists (Academic Personnel) in the Human Resources Department.
** This is an in-person position. **
Position Description:
Under the Executive Director of Human Resources, the Senior HR Generalist (Academic Personnel) performs a range of complex HR functions, including recruitment, employee selection, classification, compensation, and records management. This role involves working independently and collaboratively to support faculty hiring, manage HR information systems, and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
Salary Placement:
Salary placement will be on Range 52 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B.
** Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3
($7,824.00 / $8,291.00 / $8,759.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.
Probationary period for new Classified employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.
Example of Duties
Recruitment, Selection and New Hire Processing:
• Manage the recruitment and selection process for new and replacement full-time and part-time positions, including requisition, job fairs, and special events.
• Act as the primary liaison between selection committees, hiring administrators/managers, and the Chancellor to facilitate hiring.
• Analyze and organize new position requests, including classification, salary placement, and cost projections. Create and revise job descriptions and perform salary surveys.
• Research recruitment sources, write effective advertising text, and provide applicants with information on recruitment requirements, minimum qualifications, and hiring procedures.
• Evaluate applications and transcripts for minimum qualifications and equivalency, referring complex cases to the Executive Director or Vice President. Ensure compliance with Academic Senate equivalency policies.
• Oversee the formation and orientation of selection committees, guide them through procedures, and ensure adherence to equal employment opportunity guidelines. Debrief panels on scoring and disqualifications.
• Research and recommend interview questions and skills evaluations. Manage selection process paperwork and supervise staff involved in scheduling and document preparation.
• Advise on reference checks, employment offers, salary placement, and regret calls. Prepare and coordinate necessary hiring forms and documentation for Payroll and Board agenda entries.
• Maintain the District’s position classification plan, conduct classification and compensation surveys, and review reclassification requests.
• Prepare orientation materials, coordinate with the Benefits Coordinator, and assist new employees with paperwork. Prepare and maintain employment-related contracts.
• Create and maintain employee biography and award records, respond to information requests, and prepare specialized reports as needed.
Information Processing:
• Assist in developing, interpreting, and applying personnel policies and procedures, and recommend improvements.
• Prepare Board Agenda items, personnel schedules, and supporting documentation; produce and distribute related materials and reports; respond to administrative information requests.
• Track faculty educational units for salary advancement, Department Chair reassigned time, evaluation processes, and adjunct faculty salary advancements. Process adjunct instructors based on annual data and doctoral degrees.
• Maintain an eligibility pool for adjunct faculty, ensure documentation currency, and manage part-time faculty assignments each Spring semester.
• Communicate with Payroll and other departments to resolve issues related to paperwork, employee classification, and compensation. Review personnel transactions for compliance with District practices and regulations.
• Maintain and administer applicant tracking software and integrated management systems. Update employee data, including distribution, seniority, and position listings. Collect, analyze, and tabulate statistical records on employees and hiring status.
• Assist the public with information and standard forms, and respond to survey data requests from other agencies.
• Maintain confidentiality of all personnel records and proceedings.
Office Administration:
• Direct, train, and review the work of temporary HR staff on a daily or project basis.
• Maintain a supportive and responsive environment for students, faculty, staff, and the public. Assist with greeting, providing services, and answering phone calls.
• Revise and update District forms related to personnel processes, create new forms as needed, and develop office procedures to enhance efficiency.
Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
Experience:
Equivalent to five (5) full time years of progressively responsible full-time experience in human resources, including work with employment processes in a higher education or public agency setting.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Certification from a recognized HR organization (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR).
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and experience with applicant tracking and administrative software (e.g., Colleague/Datatel, Banner, PeopleSoft).
• Experience managing HR projects or initiatives, including planning, executing, and evaluating outcomes.
• Familiarity with emerging HR technologies and tools that enhance HR functions and processes.
